North Korea Websites and Video Links

Here are some North Korean websites:

http://www.korea-dpr.com/

We discussed how these sites are virtually the only thing on the internet coming out of N. Korea.  No youtube videos (from N. Koreans at least), no twitter accounts, no private websites.  N. Korea has been described as an “internet black hole.”

Contrast this with S. Korea, where music and videos like this are popular.  What “western” themes do you recognize in this video?  What can we infer about S. Korea just from this video:

Here is the link to the N. Korea documentary that we watched in class:

Fall of Yugoslavia Computer Lab Activity

Today in the computer lab we will be using the internet to access and read specific documents that explain the rise of nationalism and the fall of Yugoslavia.

In this activity, you will read 6 selections about the former Yugoslavia and answer questions about them.

Some of these questions will not be answered specifically in the text.  You will need to think critically about the readings and apply the concepts we have already discussed in class to answer them.  You should also utilize the internet to find accurate information as required.

Click here to access the readings.

You will submit your completed question packet on Tuesday, February 22nd.

Following your completion of the questions, you will then write a 500 word essay that addresses the following question:

  • What factors led up to the violent break-up of the Yugoslav state?

Your essay must address the following terms (make these concepts bold in your text so that they are easily identifiable):

  • state
  • nation
  • nationalism
  • ethnicity
  • ethno-nationalism
  • irredentism
  • multi-ethnic state
  • multi-national state
  • separatism
  • secession
  • homeland

You will email me your completed essays by midnight on 2/24/11 (next Thursday).  They should be in .doc format.
